Kimura Shukokai Karate Kent Club Championships and Party 2008

On the 29th November 2008 the club held its 3rd annual competition and party to end the year. We were very privileged this year as Shihan Eddie Daniels 8th Dan, National coach and Joint World Chief Instructor and Sensei Solfrid Daniels 5th Dan came down from Birmingham to watch our event and present the prizes.

The whole day went well but only through the help of many of the parents, helping out with things such as making teas and coffees, putting the body armour on etc.

This year was a great year with more competitors than ever before taking part in the Kumite and Kata categories. Everybody has been training so hard throughout the year and this paid off with some well executed performances. The Kata started the day off with the 8th kyu - 5th kyu grades competing first, we saw all sorts of kata being performed including yellow belt Adam Axford performing a Brown belt kata! The first place however went to Jacob Tew who performed a fantastic Pinan Sandan, which he had obviously worked really hard on thus gaining him the trophy with James Hall coming in a close second and Adam Axford coming third.

Next was the cadet Kata open with many strong kata being performed, Elle Osborne fought off stiff competition from competitors who were of a higher grade showing she has much promise for the future coming 3rd. Ferne Jones came second, showing that her Kata has come on over the last year but she was just pipped to the post by Ben Pomeroy who won the event with the Kata Jinn which was strong and well executed.

Next we saw the adults and youths competing in the junior grade open Kata. Many of our beginners having a go at their first competition and the kata they performed were all of a good standard with the third place being really closely fought out. White belt Nevil Slade came 3rd in his first competition with Martyn Jones coming second with a well executed performance of the Kata Seriyu. Richard Tew took the trophy with the brilliantly performed Kata Pinan Godan.

The next category was the adults and youths 3rd kyu - Dan grade Kata which was closely fought out with Rowan Fraser from Kwarriors London coming 3rd and Josh Deane coming second with the performance of Seinchin and Nepapoo. Jasmine Pomeroy reigned supreme with her performance of Annan and Seinchin gaining her the trophy.

We then had a short break before moving on to the Kumite (fighting) events. We started with the little ones category with many of our younger competitors in their first competition. All performed well and fought like little tigers, with Michael Pereira triumphant in first place, Morgan Tindall in second and James Hall in 3rd place.

Next was the Cadets Mixed category with many of our more experienced competitors, performing well and fighting with true Kimura Shukokai Karate spirit. Jack Cutler fought well throughout all his fights and ended up victorious with Ben Pomeroy in second and Elise Jones in 3rd place.

Next was the Youth girls category with all of our girls fighting extremely well demonstrating that they can all fight with spirit and determination even if they are fighting against a world champion! Jasmine Pomeroy reigned triumphant in first place with Maria Pereira just behind in second and Elle Osborne finishing in third place. All three girls showed great promise for the future and will make a great team in years to come.

Next was the Youth boys category with all competitors fighting extremely well showing that they can all fight with determination Josh Deane finished in first place with George Vaughan just behind in second and Jack Santer in a close third place. Again it was nice to see such spirit being shown by everyone.

Next was the Men's category which proved to be the most exciting of the day. Competitiors from all grades, from white to brown belt competed and once on the tattami, grade appeared to mean nothing as everyone had a go. Rowan Fraser's experience however bought him first place with some well executed gyakuzuki scoring repetitive ippons. Martyn Jones a very close second and just behind in third place Richard Tew.

The competition then ended and it was onward to the party. We sat down to our formal dinner which was much needed after the long day. Shihan Daniels, 8th Dan then presented the trophies and medals to all successful students. Sensei Chris Simpson then made a speech thanking the parents and other members of the club for all their support throughout the year.

The prestigious "Student of the Year" shields were then presented to the junior grade and senior grade students who throughout the year have shown the greatest determination, effort and application in their karate. The awards this year went to 11 year old Maria Pereira 4th Kyu and 13 year old Jasmine Pomeroy 1st Dan who have both trained with true Kimura Shukokai spirit during the year and show great promise for the future.

The disco then started and we all had great fun dancing late into the evening.

We had an amazing day and evening and that is thanks to all our dedicated students and parents from who we received some lovely gifts, thank you, and we hope that we can make 2009 as good if not better than 2008. We appreciate everyone's efforts and believe we have one of the best karate clubs in Kent due to the people we have who support us throughout the year, Thank you so much,

Sensei Chris and Sensei Katie, Oss
